What does ChatGPT actually know about you?
More than its memory shows you. ChatGPT holds three layers of information about you, and most people only ever check the first one. Here's how to see all three — including the layer that holds months of your projects, decisions and preferences.
The three layers
1. Memory The visible layer
Short facts ChatGPT decided to save: your name, role, a few preferences. See and edit every entry under Settings → Personalization → Manage memories. For most users it's a page of bullet points.
2. Custom Instructions What you told it
The “what should ChatGPT know about you” and “how should it respond” fields you filled in yourself. Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions.
3. Your conversation history The real layer
Every project you described, every decision you reasoned through, every person you mentioned, every draft you asked it to fix — across hundreds or thousands of conversations. This is what ChatGPT has actually accumulated about you, and no settings page shows it.
Why asking it doesn't work
The popular trick — asking “what do you know about me?” — reads from memory and the current chat only. You get a confident summary of the visible layer and none of the archive. It's the equivalent of judging a library by the card taped to the door.
How to actually see everything
- Export your ChatGPT data (Settings → Data controls → Export data) — the complete record of every conversation.
- Upload the ZIP below. The analysis reads your entire history and shows you what it contains: your projects, preferences, people, decisions and writing style — the analysis and preview are free.
- Optionally, turn it into a portable context document you can give Claude, or keep as the definitive “what my AI knows about me” file.
Can other people see your ChatGPT history?
- Other users: no. Your chats are private to your account. The exception is anything you explicitly share — a shared conversation link is public to whoever has the URL (and can be indexed if posted somewhere public), so audit yours under Settings → Data controls → Shared links.
- Your employer: only on a work account. On ChatGPT Team/Enterprise, workspace admins have compliance-level access, and Business plans can log usage. On your personal account, an employer can't see inside ChatGPT — but on a company device or network they may see that you used it. Keep personal chats on a personal account and device.
- Anyone with your unlocked device: yes. Your full history is one click away in the sidebar — the most common real-world leak is simply a borrowed laptop.
Taking control of it
- Edit memory: Settings → Personalization → Manage memories — delete single entries or everything.
- Stop training use: Settings → Data controls → turn off “Improve the model for everyone”.
- Delete history: deleted chats leave your account and OpenAI's systems on a ~30-day schedule.
- Own your copy: the export is yours — your accumulated context is portable, not locked in.
Frequently asked questions
Does ChatGPT remember conversations I deleted?+
Deleted chats disappear from your account and are scheduled for deletion from OpenAI's systems (within 30 days, per OpenAI's policy, unless legally required to retain). They also stop appearing in your data export.
Can I make ChatGPT forget something specific?+
Yes — for memory. Settings → Personalization → Manage memories lets you delete individual entries or wipe memory entirely. You can also tell it in-chat: "Forget that I …". Conversation history is separate: delete the chats themselves.
Does ChatGPT use my conversations for training?+
By default, consumer conversations can be used to improve models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone" in Settings → Data controls. Team and Enterprise data is excluded by default.
Is asking ChatGPT "what do you know about me" accurate?+
Only partially. It answers from memory plus the current conversation — not from your full history. It will confidently summarize the few facts it stored and miss months of context. The export is the only complete record.
Can my employer see my ChatGPT history?+
Only if you use a workspace account they control — Team and Enterprise admins have compliance-level access. On a personal account they can't see your chats, though on a company device or network they may see that you visited ChatGPT. Keep personal use on personal accounts.
How do I see my full ChatGPT history?+
The sidebar shows recent chats and search covers titles, but the only complete, offline record is the data export (Settings → Data controls → Export data) — it includes every conversation as conversations.json plus a browsable chat.html.
