Questions

Can I transfer my ChatGPT history to Claude?+

Yes. Export your data from ChatGPT (Settings → Data controls → Export data), upload the ZIP here, and you get a Claude-ready context document built from your entire conversation history — not just the handful of facts ChatGPT stores in memory.

How is this different from Claude's built-in memory import?+

Claude's official import moves what ChatGPT remembers about you — a short summary of stored memory facts. ChatGPTToClaude reads your full archive of conversations and extracts every project, decision, person and preference, including everything memory never captured.

How long does a ChatGPT data export take?+

OpenAI emails you a download link, usually within a few minutes for most accounts (up to 24 hours for very large histories). The link expires after 24 hours, so upload the ZIP soon after it arrives.

Does it work from Claude to ChatGPT?+

Yes. Upload your Claude export (Settings → Privacy → Export data) and you get a ChatGPT-ready context document to paste into a new chat, Custom Instructions or a Project. ChatGPT has no built-in import, so this is the practical way to switch back.

Is my data private?+

Your export is parsed in your browser. Only distilled excerpts are processed for extraction, raw conversations are never stored, and nothing is used for training. You keep the one document that matters and the rest is deleted.
