How to export your ChatGPT data

The official export is the only way to get all your ChatGPT conversations at once — every chat, in one ZIP, on any plan, including free. It takes four steps: open Settings → Data controls, choose Export data, confirm the request, and wait for the email — for most accounts it arrives within about ten minutes, though very large histories can take up to a day. Download the ZIP promptly, because the link expires after 24 hours. Inside you'll find chat.html for reading your history in a browser and conversations.json, the machine-readable file that tools — including a migration to Claude — actually work with, plus account metadata like user.json. The export is all-or-nothing and leaves a few things out, like Custom GPT configurations and deleted conversations. The four steps

1. Open Settings. Click your profile picture (bottom-left on web, top-right in the apps) → Settings.
2. Go to Data controls → Export data. Confirm the dialog. OpenAI starts building your archive.

3. Watch your inbox. The email “Your ChatGPT data export is ready” contains the download link. It usually arrives within minutes.
4. Download within 24 hours. The link expires after that — if you miss it, just request a new export.

How long does the ChatGPT data export take?

For most accounts the email arrives in 2–10 minutes. Very large histories (thousands of conversations) can take up to 24 hours. If nothing has arrived after a day, check spam, then request the export again — repeated requests are fine and free.

What's in the ZIP

• conversations.json — your complete chat history with titles, dates and every message. This is the file that matters for any transfer.
• chat.html — the same history as a browsable page. Open it locally to search your old chats.
• user.json, message_feedback.json — account metadata and your feedback history.

Note: generated images and files are included only in recent exports and only partially; Custom GPT configurations are not included at all.

What the export does not include

• Deleted conversations — once deleted, they are not in any future export. Export before cleaning up.
• Temporary chats — they were never saved to your history, so there is nothing to export.
• Custom GPT configurations — instructions and knowledge files of GPTs you built have to be copied out by hand from the GPT editor.
• Memory as a list — what ChatGPT “remembers about you” is a separate thing from your chat history. View and copy it under Settings → Personalization → Manage memories, or see everything ChatGPT knows about you.

How big will the export be?

Smaller than people expect. Conversation text is compact — histories with hundreds of chats typically produce a ZIP of a few megabytes, and even thousands of conversations usually stay well under what fits in an email attachment. What inflates an export is media: if your recent history is full of generated images, expect hundreds of megabytes. Either way, the download is a single ZIP and transfer tools accept it as-is — size only matters for your own storage.

Reading your archive: chat.html vs conversations.json

For humans, open chat.html — it renders your entire history in the browser, searchable with Cmd/Ctrl+F, no tools required. It's genuinely the best way to re-find that one conversation from last spring. conversations.json is the same data for machines: a large JSON array where each conversation stores its messages as a linked tree of nodes — fine for scripts and transfer tools, miserable to read by eye. Rule of thumb: browse the HTML, feed the JSON to software.

Treat the ZIP like a diary

Your export is plaintext — no password, no encryption — and it contains everything you have ever told ChatGPT: work details, drafts, personal questions at 2am. Store it like you would store a diary: on your own machine or encrypted storage, not in a shared drive or an email thread. ChatGPT data export not working? Fixes

• No email after an hour: check spam and promotions folders — the sender is OpenAI, not “ChatGPT”. Then request again.
• “Link expired”: the 24-hour window passed. Request a fresh export; there's no limit.
• Export button greyed out or erroring: log out and back in, or try the web app at chatgpt.com instead of the mobile app — exports are most reliable on web.
• Team/Enterprise workspace: your workspace admin may control exports. Personal chats need a personal-account export.
• ZIP won't open: re-download; a partial download is the usual cause. On iPhone, save to Files first.

What to do with your export

Keep the ZIP as a backup — it's the only copy of your history that OpenAI will ever hand you. And if you're exporting because you're moving to Claude, you don't need to open it at all:
