How to export your ChatGPT data
The official export is the only way to get all your ChatGPT conversations at once — every chat, in one ZIP, on any plan. Four steps, a couple of gotchas, and what to do with the file once you have it.
The four steps
- Open Settings. Click your profile picture (bottom-left on web, top-right in the apps) → Settings.
- Go to Data controls → Export data. Confirm the dialog. OpenAI starts building your archive.
- Watch your inbox. The email “Your ChatGPT data export is ready” contains the download link. It usually arrives within minutes.
- Download within 24 hours. The link expires after that — if you miss it, just request a new export.
How long does the ChatGPT data export take?
For most accounts the email arrives in 2–10 minutes. Very large histories (thousands of conversations) can take up to 24 hours. If nothing has arrived after a day, check spam, then request the export again — repeated requests are fine and free.
What's in the ZIP
conversations.json— your complete chat history with titles, dates and every message. This is the file that matters for any transfer.chat.html— the same history as a browsable page. Open it locally to search your old chats.user.json,message_feedback.json— account metadata and your feedback history.
Note: generated images and files are included only in recent exports and only partially; Custom GPT configurations are not included at all.
ChatGPT data export not working? Fixes
- No email after an hour: check spam and promotions folders — the sender is OpenAI, not “ChatGPT”. Then request again.
- “Link expired”: the 24-hour window passed. Request a fresh export; there's no limit.
- Export button greyed out or erroring: log out and back in, or try the web app at chatgpt.com instead of the mobile app — exports are most reliable on web.
- Team/Enterprise workspace: your workspace admin may control exports. Personal chats need a personal-account export.
- ZIP won't open: re-download; a partial download is the usual cause. On iPhone, save to Files first.
What to do with your export
Keep the ZIP as a backup — it's the only copy of your history that OpenAI will ever hand you. And if you're exporting because you're moving to Claude, you don't need to open it at all:
Frequently asked questions
Can I export a single ChatGPT conversation?+
Not through the official export, which is all-or-nothing. For one conversation, use the share link, copy the text manually, or print the page to PDF (Cmd/Ctrl+P). Browser extensions can export single chats in Markdown or PDF.
Does the export include deleted conversations?+
No. Deleted chats are gone from the export. Archived conversations are included.
Can free ChatGPT accounts export data?+
Yes. Export is available on all plans — free, Plus, Pro and Team — from Settings → Data controls.
Is exporting my data against OpenAI's terms?+
No — it's an official feature OpenAI provides, and under GDPR/CCPA you have a right to your data. What you do with your own export, including moving it to another AI, is up to you.
