How to switch from ChatGPT to Claude without losing your context

Switching AI assistants used to mean starting from zero: no memory of your projects, your preferences, or the hundred small instructions you gave over months of conversations. It doesn't have to. This guide covers why people are switching, whether you should, and the exact steps to move from ChatGPT to Claude with your context intact.

Why are people switching from ChatGPT to Claude?

The switching wave is real enough that Tom's Guide, TechRadar and XDA all maintain migration guides. The reasons people cite most:

  • Writing and coding quality. Claude's long-form writing, code output and instruction-following are the most common reasons given for the move.
  • Tone. Claude is frequently described as more direct and less sycophantic — fewer compliments, more substance.
  • Projects. Claude Projects with persistent knowledge files map well to how people actually organize work.
  • Anthropic courting switchers. Since March 2026, Claude ships a free memory import from ChatGPT — the clearest signal that switching is now a mainstream path.

Should you switch?

An honest checklist before you commit:

Switch if

  • Most of your usage is writing, analysis, coding or long documents
  • You want project-based organization with persistent knowledge
  • You've been frustrated by tone or instruction-following

Think twice if

  • — You rely heavily on Custom GPTs, image generation, or voice mode: none of these transfer, and Claude's equivalents differ.
  • — You hit usage caps often: Claude's limits are tighter than ChatGPT's on comparable plans, and they surprise most switchers.

The good news: switching isn't a divorce. Keep your ChatGPT account during the transition and let the two run in parallel for a couple of weeks.

Step 1 — Export your ChatGPT data

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls.
  2. Click Export data and confirm.
  3. OpenAI emails you a download link — usually within minutes, up to 24 hours for very large histories.
  4. Download the ZIP. It contains conversations.json — your entire chat history with every conversation you've ever had.

The download link expires after 24 hours, so grab the ZIP as soon as the email lands. Export stuck or missing? Full export walkthrough with fixes →

Step 2 — Know what transfers (and what doesn't)

TransfersDoesn't transfer
  • ✓ Who you are, your work, your projects
  • ✓ Preferences and standing instructions
  • ✓ People, companies, tools you mention
  • ✓ Decisions and their reasoning
  • ✓ Your writing style and voice
  • ✕ The conversations themselves
  • ✕ Custom GPTs and their configs
  • ✕ Generated images and files
  • ✕ Deep-research reports (re-download them)
  • ✕ Voice mode history

This is the key mental shift: you're not moving chats, you're moving context — the accumulated understanding an assistant has of you. Chats are logs; context is what makes the next conversation good.

Step 3 — Move your context to Claude

Three ways to do it, from quickest to most complete:

A. Claude's built-in memory import Free · 1 min

Claude → Settings → Capabilities → Import memory. Claude gives you a prompt to paste into ChatGPT; paste the answer back. Moves only what ChatGPT's memory chose to store — typically a few dozen facts. Do this regardless; it takes a minute. What it covers and misses →

B. Manual summary prompt Free · 15 min

Ask ChatGPT: “Summarize everything you've learned about me — goals, projects, preferences, how I like to communicate, grouped by theme.” Paste the result into Claude. Better than nothing, but it only reflects what one summary call can recall — recency-biased and shallow on old projects.

C. Full-history analysis Complete

Upload your export ZIP to ChatGPTToClaude. Every conversation is analyzed — thousands of them — and distilled into one Claude-ready document: projects, preferences, people, decisions, writing style. This captures what memory never stored and what a summary prompt forgets. Free analysis and preview; €14.99 to unlock the full document.

Step 4 — Set up Claude like your ChatGPT

  • Paste your context document into Claude's profile preferences (Settings → Profile) or the project you'll work from most.
  • Recreate Custom Instructions: both ChatGPT fields (“what should it know” / “how should it respond”) map to Claude's preferences and per-project instructions.
  • Rebuild your top 2–3 Custom GPTs as Claude Projects: instructions become project instructions, uploaded files become project knowledge.
  • Keep ChatGPT alive for two weeks. When you catch yourself missing something, export or copy just that piece.

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer my ChatGPT history to Claude?+

Yes. There is no official button that imports conversations, but you can export your full ChatGPT history as a ZIP and either upload key files into Claude Projects or run the export through ChatGPTToClaude to get one distilled context document built from every conversation.

How long does the ChatGPT data export take?+

OpenAI emails a download link, usually within minutes; very large histories can take up to 24 hours. The link expires after 24 hours, so download the ZIP as soon as the email arrives.

Does Claude import ChatGPT conversations directly?+

No. Claude's built-in import (Settings → Capabilities → Import memory) only transfers ChatGPT's stored memory — a short list of facts — not your conversations. Full chats have to be brought over as project knowledge or as a distilled context document.

Should I delete my ChatGPT account after switching?+

Not immediately. Keep it until you've verified everything important made it across — memory summaries are lossy, and an active account is the only way to re-export anything you missed.
