Switch from ChatGPT to Grok without starting over
Grok has no import feature for ChatGPT data — nothing pulls your history in for you. The working path has three steps: export your data from ChatGPT (Settings → Data controls → Export data; the download link arrives by email and expires after 24 hours), distill that history into one compact document, and hand it to Grok somewhere it will actually persist — Custom Instructions on grok.com for the essentials, a pasted first message that Grok's memory picks up for the rest. What transfers is the substance of your work: projects, preferences, decisions, people, and how you like answers written. What doesn't is ChatGPT-specific plumbing — custom GPTs and Project files have no Grok equivalent, and the conversations themselves stay behind. This guide walks each step, maps where every ChatGPT concept lives on the Grok side, and ends with a practical suggestion: run both assistants for two weeks before you commit.
Step 1 — Export your ChatGPT data
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data controls.
- Click Export data and confirm.
- OpenAI emails you a download link — it expires after 24 hours, so download the ZIP promptly.

Step 2 — What transfers, what doesn't
- Transfers as context: who you are, your projects and their state, preferences, standing instructions, people and companies, decisions, writing style.
- Needs manual rebuild: Projects and custom GPTs — Grok has no direct equivalent, so their instructions move into Custom Instructions or the first message of a dedicated chat.
- Doesn't transfer: the conversations themselves — Grok can't ingest a chat archive.
Step 3 — Get your context into Grok
A. Custom Instructions Free · durable
On grok.com, open Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions and paste the essentials: who you are, what you work on, how you want answers written. The field has a character limit that xAI keeps changing — if it doesn't fit, keep instructions over facts.
B. First message + memory Free · quick
Paste the full document as the first message of a new chat and ask Grok to keep it in mind. With "Personalize Grok with your conversation history" enabled under Settings → Data controls, that context carries into future conversations.
C. Build the document from your full history Complete
Upload your ChatGPT export ZIP as-is. Every conversation is analyzed and distilled into one Grok-ready context document — the input that makes options A and B actually good.
Where each ChatGPT thing lives in Grok
| In ChatGPT | Grok equivalent |
|---|---|
| Custom Instructions | Settings → Personalization → Custom Instructions on grok.com |
| Memory (stored facts) | Grok memory — enabled in Settings → Data controls, seeded by pasting your context |
| A Project with instructions + files | No direct equivalent — paste the project's context into a dedicated chat |
| Custom GPTs | No direct equivalent — their instructions become pasted context |
| Conversations | Not importable — distill them into a context document instead |
Run both for two weeks before you commit
Keep your ChatGPT account alive during the transition. Before you cancel anything: your export ZIP is downloaded and stored, the instructions from your important custom GPTs and Projects are saved somewhere, and a week of real work has gone through Grok without you reaching back for ChatGPT — the only test that matters.
Frequently asked questions
Does Grok have an import feature for ChatGPT data?+
No. Grok can't ingest a ChatGPT export. Your context comes in through Custom Instructions, or pasted into a conversation where Grok's memory picks it up.
Where do custom instructions live in Grok?+
On grok.com: click your profile, open Settings, then Personalization → Custom Instructions. The Grok tab inside X exposes fewer options, so do the setup on grok.com — it applies to the same account.
Does Grok have memory?+
Yes — the "Personalize Grok with your conversation history" toggle under Settings → Data controls. It builds context from what you discuss with Grok, which is exactly why pasting your distilled history into an early conversation works: it seeds that memory with years of context instead of starting from zero.
Do my ChatGPT projects transfer to Grok?+
Not directly. Grok has no Projects feature to receive them, so paste each project's context into a dedicated chat, or fold the essential ones into Custom Instructions. The context document keeps them organized per project so this stays manageable.
Can I move my Grok history out later?+
This tool takes ChatGPT and Claude exports as input today, so Grok is a destination, not yet a source. The document you paste in is plain Markdown though — keep a copy and you can hand it to any assistant.
